Mustangs win Operation Friendship game

Girls basketball: Bloomfield Hills Marian beats Detroit Mumford 60-47 on Thursday, Feb. 28, 2019

   Division 1 No. 2-ranked Bloomfield Hills Marian downed Detroit Mumford 60-47 in the annual Operation Friendship girls basketball championship on Thursday, Feb. 28, at Marian.

   The games match the champions from the Catholic High School League and the Detroit Public School League and has been a tradition since 1975.

   Senior Olivia Moore led Marian, the CHSL A-B Division champion, with 17 points eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Senior Megan Kraus had 14 points, 15 rebounds, two steals, and three blocks. Junior Sophia Mancini added nine points, four rebounds, and three steals. Sophomore Shannon Kennedy had eight points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

   Senior Ajanee Horton led Mumford, the PSL champion, with 12 points.

   Marian avenged a 41-38 loss to Mumford in last year’s Operation Friendship championship. The Mustangs finished the regular season at 19-1 and open the Michigan High School Athletic Association district playoffs against Berkley (16-4) on Wednesday, March 6, at Marian.

   Marian’s only loss came against Division 2 No. 1 ranked Detroit Edison Public School Academy.

   Dearborn Divine Child, the CHSL A-B Division runner-up, beat Detroit Martin Luther King, the PSL runner-up, 53-48 in the consolation game.
