Detroit Edison Public School Academy opened its season, beating Bloomfield Hills Marian 65-49 in a battle of girls basketball state championship contenders on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Marian.

Michigan State University-bound and Miss Basketball contender Damiya Hagemann led the Pioneers with 16 points and eight assists.

Edison had won three straight Michigan High School Athletic Association championships (Division 2 in 2019 and Class C titles in 2018 and 2017). The Pioneers were undefeated, ranked No. 1, and had reached the Region 14 championship in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to the pandemic.

Marian also had its season halted without conclusion in 2020, reaching the Division 1, Region 7 championship game against Detroit Renaissance.

Both Edison and Marian look to vie for state championships in their divisions in the shortened 2021 season.

Edison went to halftime with a 38-26 lead over Marian and extended the

lead to 44-28 early in the third quarter.

Senior Shannon Kennedy (Miss Golf) rallied Marian back to within six points at 48-42, scoring 10 points in the quarter. Kennedy finished with 21 points.

Kennedy got into foul trouble in the fourth and Edison pulled away for the victory.

Junior Ruby Whitehorn, who has offers from Michigan, Michigan State University, Mississippi State, LSU, Florida, Duke, and Oklahoma, had 21 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Na’Kiya Bonner scored 11 points.
